Diversity has never been so beautiful

Fashion has always been considered as a separate world, the one of unreachable luxury and beauty, inhabited by flawless top models in silky, shiny gowns. Well actually that’s still a cliché, but something started changing in the past few years: this planet has been contaminated by diversity. The general meaning of beauty has been demolished, any kind of commonplace has vanished, and certainties replaced by surprise effects. We started seeing “ugliness “ in this perfect world, but what is ugly and what is beauty? As Umberto Eco said: “ Beauty is, in some ways, boring. Even if its concept changes through the ages, nevertheless a beautiful object must always follow certain rules… Ugliness is unpredictable and offers an infinite range of possibilities. Beauty is finite. Ugliness is infinite, like God.”

The SS19 GCDS fashion show reminds me of this.

Women and men of any color, height, shape, were representing the #GCDSFUTUREBEACH, a time when all computers in the world will crash and society will be transported back to the olden days. Bodies with 3 prosthetic breasts, short, tall, thin, curvy girls with dreads, fluo hair, tattoos killing it on the catwalk.

Is this “different”? Different from what? From that cliche perfect planet? And why should we not think the contrary, that the “perfect planet” is different and not the normal world, where everyone is unique, where everyone should be accepted for how he or she is, where each one is perfect with their own imperfections?

Giuliano Calza, has brought this thematic to the young generation since day one and me, as a young woman, I’m thankful that fashion can lead to revolutions.
