We are used to consider the four fashion cities Milan, Paris, London, New York as the main sources of trends and talents. They are viewed like the moving engine of the world of designers, photographers, fashionistas and all those ones who embody fashion. Obviously people need a landmark to be guided and oriented to what is apparently the best for the fashion system, otherwise they would be bewildered by the responsibility of choosing and selecting by themselves. What I think is slightly different. Fashion is everywhere, in each corner of the planet, in each city or town we can find incredibly talented personalities, maybe even better than the same ones we are used to see on the parisian or milanese catwalks and what is important is to praise all of them.
Alexandra Moura, born and based in Portugal, represents her country at her best, creating pieces with a profound analyse on cultures and contradictory aesthetics, researching new alternative shapes and volumes, just as she did in the fall/winter 2015 collection “Primal(u)nation” a modern homage to tribal traditions and a triumph of overlappings and oversized lines.
Alexandra is an important designer in Portugal and not only, she has a rich background in the world of fashion, so I really wanted to hear an opinion of her regarding fashion and it’s relationship with society, the one of “love and hate”: “Trends are important mainly because of the information and the constant updates regarding the time we are going through. It is important to look for the trends, however, they are just information. I don’t follow trends, for my creations, I just follow ideas and concepts, which are explored until exhaustion.” A balanced position, which I completely share. Trends can be a great inspiration, but personality and the capacity to catch the beautiful in everything, are the privileges which will open each door in our lives: “A photo, a person, an object, a sensation, a feeling are all source of inspiration. Everything that is beautiful through my eyes, everything that have the capability to bring me in another world, another dimension, that makes me dream and gives me the power to have ideas”, Alexandra says. This is what I call an artistic person, because only artists have and capture a tight connection with life. That’s why to the question “Which is the concept which unifies all your collections?” she answered: “Life”….because fashion is life and has to be lived with love and sensitivity.
